Hair Loss
For most women (and some men), our hair is our crowning glory. A beautiful head of hair adds to our personality and is a means of self-expression. We can cut, color, and style it to fit our mood or reflect a certain period in our life. Healthy hair is a direct reflection of a healthy body. Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky to have healthy hair, and instances arise when the amount of hair we have starts to lessen, and the thickness of the strands begins to thin out—the result: thin hair with sparse patches that can even lead to hair loss.
No matter the type of hair you were born with, it’s likely to change to some degree at some point. Hair loss is an age-related condition, but that doesn’t mean it can’t occur in younger patients. It can.
What is hair loss?
Thinning hair and hair loss are common conditions that can happen at any age and for several reasons. Luckily, the hair care and aesthetics industry is normalizing thinning hair and hair loss and with that comes more education and options for correcting it. However, many people fear losing their hair (especially as they get older), which is why some take a preventative and proactive approach to preserve what they have through a healthy diet and a hair-focused routine.
On average, it’s normal to shed between 50 and 150 hairs daily. But when more than moderate amounts of hair are falling out (you may see more hair on your pillow, in your brush, or at the bottom of your shower), it’s time to evaluate why it’s happening and what to do about it.
Why hair loss happens
Although it may feel like your hair changes overnight, it’s a long time in the making. Hair loss doesn’t occur for any one reason. Instead, multiple factors lead to it. The main drivers of hair loss include:
- Lifestyle choices
- Genetics
- Underlying health conditions
- External factors like stress, pollution, environment
- Aging
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Post-pregnancy
- COVID
- Hormonal changes
- Clogged hair follicles
- Autoimmune disorders
What hair loss looks like
Hair loss mostly looks the same from one person to the next, although variations can exist. When thinning hair and hair loss exists, there may be a wider-than-normal gap in the part, bald spots at the temples, patchiness throughout, a hairline that pulls away from the forehead, less volume, and excessive shedding. In addition, many women notice that their ponytails appear smaller, which is a change in the diameter of the hair.
Thinning hair and hair loss can also feel different. Often, the scalp is drier, and so is the hair. As the hair grows, it may be more coarse, gray, and dull. It can also break very easily.
Thinning hair is accompanied by smaller hair follicles, known as miniaturization. It’s not that the hair shrinks but rather that the follicles become smaller, so as the hair grows, it becomes thinner, given the lack of space. Lastly, the hair only stays in each phase of the hair growth cycle for a short time.
Alma TED
Alma TED is a pain-free treatment and doesn’t use needles but rather acoustic sound waves and air pressure to drive a specialized hair growth formula with proven ingredients into the scalp. The Alma TED system also harnesses the power of ultrasound-based energy with a unique tip engineered with Impact Delivery™. This special push-back effect compliments the treatment when topical products are used. Together, this unique approach delivers a non-invasive, non-traumatic option to correct hair loss and thinning hair concerns.
Strengthening the scalp and feeding it with the nutrients it needs to thrive also strengthens the hair follicles so that each strand is equipped to grow efficiently.
Currently, Alma TED is the only low-frequency hair restoration ultrasound system on the market that works with sound waves to grow better hair. The ingredients in the serum used during the treatment contain growth factors to wake up dormant hair follicles to jumpstart the hair growth cycle. In turn, the hair begins to grow thicker. Studies report that with the treatment, the hair can even grow back to its original shade. Some patients notice results as soon as three weeks, although most see the full effect at the treatment’s end, consisting of three sessions one month apart.
HydraFacial Keravive
The HydraFacial Keravive is a unique scalp treatment that cleanses, stimulates, nourishes, and hydrates it, so it’s healthy. With an unhealthy scalp, the hair lacks the foundation to thrive properly. This relatively new treatment works similarly to a HydraFacial on the face, just for your scalp. HydraFacial Keravive uses the same device and similar attachments to purify the scalp of dead skin cells, oil, product buildup, and other hair offenders and then infuses active ingredients into the scalp for a facial-like result. In the end, thicker, fuller hair will be staring back at you in the mirror.
HydraFacial Keravive follows a similar three-step protocol focusing on deep cleansing and exfoliation (the third step is an at-home product). The scalp treatment also employs the brand’s HydraFacial machine and vortex technology (the vacuum-sucking part of the treatment). However, the most significant difference is that HydraFacial Keravive cleanses and nurtures the scalp, making it healthier to stimulate hair growth for all hair and scalp types.
Who do these treatments benefit?
The TED treatment works well for anyone with hair-related concerns regarding growth or thinning. The treatment works to nourish the scalp and hair follicles, making it an appropriate solution for anything with hair shedding or hair loss. It’s an excellent treatment for maintaining hair health, too. TED works for genetic-related, stress-related, post-partum and even COVID-related hair thinning.
The procedure is effective for men and women and helps to improve male and female pattern baldness and non-scarring alopecia.
What to expect in terms of results?
Since hair loss is a multifactorial process, it takes time to see the results. On average, hair growth pattern changes can take three to six months to surface. Depending on which option you choose determines how soon you’ll see results.
